Choosing the Right Firmness
Which firmness level should I choose?
Firmness is a matter of personal preference and sleeping position. As a general guide:
- Soft: suits side sleepers and lighter body weights, as it allows the hips and shoulders to sink in and keeps the spine aligned.
- Medium: the most popular choice, suitable for combination sleepers and most body types.
- Firm: often preferred by front or back sleepers and those who feel more comfortable on a denser surface.
If you share a bed with a partner who prefers a different feel, consider a zip-and-link mattress so each side can be set independently.
I have back discomfort – which firmness is best?
There is no single answer, as comfort is individual. Many people with back discomfort find a medium or medium-firm mattress helps keep the spine in a neutral position through the night. However, firmness alone is not the only factor – the underlying support system, the base you use, and your sleeping position all play a role. We recommend trying your mattress for several nights before deciding whether it suits you.
Support & Construction
What does "orthopaedic" mean in mattress terms?
The term "orthopaedic" is used in the mattress industry to describe mattresses built with a firmer, more structured support layer – typically a higher spring count, denser foam, or reinforced core. It is not a regulated medical term and does not mean a mattress has been clinically tested or approved to treat any medical condition. If you have a diagnosed condition, please consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice.
What is edge support, and why does it matter?
Edge support refers to how well the perimeter of the mattress holds its shape when weight is placed near the side. Good edge support means you can sit on the edge of the bed without it collapsing, and it makes full use of the sleeping surface possible right to the border. It is particularly useful if you share a bed, if you sit on the edge of the bed to dress, or if you have limited mobility.
Do your mattresses sleep cool?
Sleeping temperature depends on several factors: the materials in the mattress, your bedding, and the room temperature. Mattresses with natural fillings such as wool or cotton, or those with open-coil and pocket spring systems, tend to allow more airflow than all-foam designs. Product pages list the key materials for each mattress so you can choose based on your preferences. If sleeping cool is a priority, look for models described as having a breathable cover or natural fibre layers.
Sizes & Bed Base Compatibility
Which mattress size do I need?
UK standard mattress sizes are:
- Single: 90 × 190 cm
- Small Double: 120 × 190 cm
- Double: 135 × 190 cm
- King: 150 × 200 cm
- Super King: 180 × 200 cm
Always measure your bed frame before ordering. If your frame is from outside the UK, dimensions may differ from the standards above.
Will the mattress work with my existing bed base?
Most Briggs Beds mattresses are suitable for slatted bases, platform tops, divan bases, and adjustable bases – but compatibility varies by model. Check the individual product page for a list of compatible base types. As a rule of thumb: sprung mattresses generally need slats no more than 7 cm apart to avoid uneven wear. Memory foam and hybrid mattresses typically perform best on a solid or closely slatted surface.
Delivery
How is my mattress delivered, and how long will it take?
Delivery timescales and methods depend on the product and your location. Full details – including delivery windows, tracked service information, and any additional charges for remote UK postcodes – are on our Delivery & Returns page.
Do you deliver to all UK addresses?
We deliver to mainland UK addresses. Some remote postcodes (including parts of Scotland, islands, and Northern Ireland) may have extended lead times or an additional surcharge. Please check the Delivery & Returns page or contact us before ordering if you are unsure whether your postcode is affected.
What if nobody is home at the time of delivery?
Our delivery team will contact you in advance to arrange a suitable time. If you need to rearrange, please get in touch as early as possible. Details on what happens if a delivery attempt is missed are outlined on our Delivery & Returns page.
Assembly & Room Placement
Do you offer a room-of-choice or assembly service?
Delivery options, including whether room-of-choice placement or assembly is available for a particular product, are detailed on the Delivery & Returns page. If you have specific requirements, contact us before placing your order and we will confirm what is available in your area.
Old Mattress Removal
Can you remove my old mattress?
Old mattress collection may be available depending on your location and the product ordered. Please see the Delivery & Returns page for current removal options and any associated charges. If removal is not available through us, your local council's bulky waste collection service is usually a cost-effective alternative.
Guarantees & Trial Periods
What guarantee comes with my mattress?
All Briggs Beds mattresses come with a manufacturer's guarantee. The length and terms of the guarantee vary by product and are listed on each product page. For full details on what is and is not covered, please visit our Guarantees & Warranties page.
Is there a comfort trial period?
Trial period availability depends on the product. Where a trial is offered, the terms – including the minimum trial period before a return can be requested and the return process – are covered on our Guarantees & Warranties page.
What does the guarantee not cover?
Guarantees generally cover manufacturing defects and structural faults. They do not typically cover normal settlement (a small amount of softening with use is expected), damage caused by an unsuitable base, staining, or damage from improper use. Full exclusions are listed on our Guarantees & Warranties page.
Cancellations & Returns
Can I cancel my order?
You may be able to cancel your order before it has been dispatched. Once a mattress has been delivered and used, cancellation rights under distance selling regulations may be limited for hygiene reasons. Full cancellation and return terms are on our Delivery & Returns page.
What if my mattress arrives damaged?
Please inspect your mattress before signing for delivery where possible. If damage is found, note it on the delivery paperwork and contact us immediately with photographs. We will arrange a replacement or repair as quickly as possible. See our Delivery & Returns page for the full process.
